Drop, drop slow tears
And bathe those beauteous feet,
That brought from heaven the news
And Prince of Peace.
Cease not, wet eyes,
His mercy to entreat;
To cry for vengeance
Sin doth never cease.
In your deep floods
Drown all my faults and fears;
Nor let his eyes see sin
But through my tears. Phineas Fletcher
Mmm ... Walton's setting springs to mind. Somehow settings like that and Leighton's Solus ad Victimam always go down well in Holy Week, even with people who don't really like modern classical choral works. I think the anguish of Jesus' last few days and hours just comes across in the harmonic language and really speaks to people of how hard that journey was.
